Starting and running a craft business can sometimes be as confusing as it is rewarding. Here are 5 things to know before starting your venture into the world of professional crafting.

1. Shop Around

Always comparison-shop for supplies. Prices can vary greatly from vendor to vendor. Once you find a low-cost supplier, don’t stop there! Over time, prices do change. It’s a good idea to keep an eye out for another distributor.

2. Buy at Wholesale Cost

Many suppliers offer discounts to qualified buyers. Qualifications differ, but usually a Retail Tax ID number will suffice. Call your local courthouse to find out whom to contact to obtain a retail tax permit in your area. (If you are selling crafts, you should already have one.) Once you have your tax identification, ask individual suppliers if they offer wholesale discounts and how to qualify.

3. Buy in Quantity

Often, buying supplies in bulk can save money. When comparison-shopping for materials, ask each vendor if quantity discounts apply and if so, what the percentages off will be.

4. Use Recycled Materials

Be creative with your raw materials! You may be able to save quite a bit by using recycled wood, textiles, plastic, metal and anything else you may use. Of course all of your supplies cannot be obtained through recycled materials, but you might be surprised at where you can cut costs if you give it some thought.

5. Shop at Discount Stores

Many large chains offer comparable prices on certain upon art and craft supplies. If you intend to resell the finished product that you make and have a Tax ID number, you can avoid paying sales tax. Ask the store manager for details on tax exemption status.

Easy to read articles are the best choice for your marketing materials. Ezines and blogs both benefit from the following tips.

1) When writing articles, make sure to keep your readers in mind.

2) Studies have shown that most Internet readers tend to scan a page to find the information they are looking for, rather than reading the entire page.

3) This means having good titles, a lot of subtitles, and making use of bullet points to help your readers easily scan your page.

4) Readers prefer a site that is easy to use and will be more willing to come back to your site time and time again.

5) The more that your readers return, the more opportunities you will have to get them to click on your affiliate links, products or browse your online store.

 6) Failing to write your articles in an easy to read format could turn your site visitors away. If they don’t have a chance to see what you have to say or to learn what your affiliate links are all about how will you profit from the traffic?

7) Keeping your articles organized as recommended will keep your visitors returning and enable your site to continue making money for you. Don’t mix a lot of topics together because that will be too confusing. Don’t write like you have inside jokes with your readers. Likely, it will just go over their head.

The good part about having your own blog is that you can edit the articles over time. Add a little time on your schedule for blog maintenance. Read your own entries and try to improve them. Can you add new links? Would a new list of information help prove the point? It can be an ongoing activity to make sure you are presenting easy to read articles.

Be a more successful business owner by using these ways to improve sales through your website.

Anyone who has been marketing online knows that the lifeblood of a business is the traffic of a site. More visitors equal more sales. However, here are some ways that you can tweak your sites with to improve sales without the need to get more visitors.

The first method is to weave in your personal touch in your sales message.

Nobody wants to be sold to by a total stranger, but many people will buy what their close friends recommend to them. If you can convince your audience that you are a personal friend who has their best interest at heart, they will be convinced to buy your products. Remember to speak to an individual in your sales letter or product description, not to your whole audience.

The second method is to publish testimonials and comments from your customers.

A good idea would be to publish both good and bad comments; that way prospects will be really convinced that these testimonials are real. When prospects see testimonials on your website, they will have the confidence to buy from you because human beings follow the herd mentality; when others have bought and proven it authentic, they will jump on the bandwagon and buy too.

You can add testimonials to your listings if you are selling through an auction format. Don’t always rely on people to go read your feedback.

Use visual representations for the problems and solutions that your product offers.

Not everyone will read your text copy from the head to the tail, but most people will pay attention to images on your website.

Offer quality bonuses to accompany the product.

When you offer bonuses that complement your product, your prospects will feel it’s a very good deal and it would be stupid to miss it. Be sure to state the monetary value of your bonuses so that people will be even more compelled to grab your good bargain.

Lastly, ask for the sale!

Many people entice their prospects with the benefits of their product, sell to them with stories of how it has solved many problems, even offered killer bonuses but forget to ask for the sale. Give a clear instruction on how to buy your product (e.g. “click the button to buy now!”).

There are a few basic skills that will help build your opt-in list. They are simple but need conscious effort.

Opt-in marketing requires the permission of a willing customer to subscribe to your marketing materials. These are things like newsletters, catalogs and promotional mailings via e-mail. The more opt-in marketing mail you are able to send, the more chances there are to make sales. To do this, you must build a list of all those who wants to subscribe to your opt-in marketing list.

From your list you will get your targeted customer. This is good since they already have shown interest in what you have to sell since they have willingly signed up for your list.

Many people think that building their lists is hard work and takes a lot of time to collect names and email addresses. This is not so. It takes a bit of patience and some strategies. But in doing this you open your site and your business to a whole new world of target market. Make the effort to take your business to a new level.

Different groups of people have different approaches in building an opt-in list. No matter how diverse the methods are there are always some crucial things you should be doing.

Here are four basic skills that will help build your opt-in list.

1) Put up a good web form in your site that immediately follows the end of your content.

Some may say this is too soon to subscribe for a website. Try to remember that your homepage should provide a quick good impression. If a visitor finds something that he or she likes they may sign up right away.

A  form for subscribing to an opt-in list is not hard to do. Just write a simple short statement about how they would like to see more and get updated about the site. Then there should be an area where they could put in their names and e-mail address. This web form will automatically save and send you the data’s inputted. As more people sign in, your list will be growing.

2) As mentioned in the first tip, make your homepage very, very impressive.

You need to have well written articles and descriptions of your site. Depending on what your site is all about, you need to capture your website visitor’s fancy. Make your site useful and very easy to use. Do not expect everyone to be tech savvy. Invest in having good programming in your site, make your graphics beautiful but don’t over do it.

Don’t waste your time making the homepage too flashy. The faster your site gets loaded, the better. Go for a look that borders between simplicity and sophisticated.

3) Provide good service and products.

A return customer is more likely to bring in more business. A satisfied customer will recommend a business. Word of mouth and recommendations alone can rake in more business than an expensive ad. As your clientele roster grows so shall your list. With more members on the list, the more people will get to know about what you have new to offer.

4) Keep a clean and private list.

Never lose the trust your customers have entrusted you. If you provide e-mails to others and they get spammed, many will probably unsubscribe to you. Remember, a good reputation will drive in more traffic and subscribers as well as strengthen the loyalty of your customers.

What type of basic skills do you employ to help build your opt-in list?

I have to admit, I didn’t even realize that this was a way for people to have their own home business. It is such a neat and snazzy name though.

So, what’s Zazzle?

Zazzle allows crafters and artisans to upload their artwork to the website. Then they can have products created using their artwork. There are many products to choose from like Cards, Apparal, and Mouse Pads.

Zazzle is company that does Print-on Demand. This allows your home business to be run without stocking inventory in your basement and garage. However, you can order your products in bulk if you want to have a few items on hand.

Two Cool Things about Zazzle

1) My favorite thing is that you can set your own royalty amount and control the amount of profit you make.

2) It’s free to open your own store.

Three Ways to Earn Money from Zazzle

First: Sell your own stuff from your store. The more products you create, the more likely it is that you’ll have plenty of sales.

Second: You can also make referrals to your own store. You can open an Associate Account. The Associate Account will earn an additional 15%-32% when you link customers to Zazzle through your website, blog, MySpace, Squidoo, etc.

Third: Sell other people’s stuff by using your associate account to refer sales. If you have a popular blog or mailing list you can talk about cool products you find in Zazzle stores. If anyone purchases through your link, you’ll make a commission.

How do you get the artwork for your products?

You’ll want to use your own works. You can’t use other people’s work that is copyrighted.

Draw your artwork.  Take Photos.  Create Digital Designs.  Scan and modify vintage works.

You can also find commercial use products to jump start your creativity. Using the items you find (and can verify you have a license to use) you can make derivative works for your store.

The first year being a new Etsy seller can be fun, frustrating and confusing. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while you start to work at home online.

1 – Limit the amount of time you spend on the forums.

You need to focus your attention on creating new products for your store. If you are on the forum looking for tips, be sure to have a notebook with you and actually write down what you plan on trying. Also, if you are on the forum to promote your business, just spend a limited amount of time. Be considerate, give advice and share your knowledge. Don’t just look at what your going to get out of a conversation.

2 – Consider selling on both Ebay and Etsy.

Look for offline places to sell your products as well. The point of this is that it relaxes your brain a bit. You aren’t all stressed out about making the Etsy store work. Less stress = more creativity and nicer communications with others.

3 – Consider making a few purchases from other Etsy sellers to gain some positive feedback.

This is a great tip if you are new to Etsy and have little or no feedback, but it’s a good idea as a veteran seller too. Many buyers are wary of buying from brand-new sellers especially if they do not have feedback.

4 – Offer free shipping with your products.

It can make a difference on how fast some items will sell. Be sure to accommodate the shipping in your listing price. Remember, you will also pay a little more in fees with the shipping included so may want to consider adjusting for that too. Consider writing ”free shipping” in your title.

5 – Use Tags because this is how potential customers will find you. Most will do a search on Etsy. Use all the tag spots available.

If you want to sell different things in your shop, then go right ahead! I like that type of store myself. It seems like a fun boutique. I get to dig around and see what I can find.

What tips do you have for the new Etsy seller?

You’ll probably need to know how to make a bow for a wrapped gift basket even if you aren’t making gift baskets as your business. Gift baskets make nice personal gifts too. I’ve always wondered how to make the perfect bow and I found some nice instructions.

The key to the look of this bow is to have two coordinating ribbons.

The ribbon appears to be at least a 2 inch ribbon.

She didn’t say that it had to be wired.

So, without further delay, please press play and enjoy!
